On election night in 2019, longstanding Federal Member for Leichardt Warren Entsch announced that he would not re-run in 2022, a decision he has now overturned.

Now instead of enjoying some quiet time gardening or relaxing on a beach, Mr Entsch will once again throw his hat in the ring for the next election to represent his electorate of Leichardt.

Mr Entsch was approached by several tourism, business and community leaders across his region urging him to postpone his retirement.

They argued that his experience, connections and credibility was what the region needed to recover from the devastating effects that COVID has wrought on Australia.

“Our region was one of the first to be severely impacted by the pandemic and we will be one of the last to recover,” Mr Entsch said.

“I feel it is incumbent on me during these uncertain times to continue to support our community and it’s residents for as long as it takes.

“My experience will ensure our community continues to have strong, effective and stable leadership during these unprecedented times.”

The next federal election is due to take place before May 2022, if Mr Entsch succeeds this will be his ninth term as the member for Leichardt.

Mr Entsch’s decision to delay his retirement sends a message that the effects of COVID are still being felt by communities across the Far North, support is still needed and he is happy to oblige.
