A 21 year old woman was winched from the Kuranda range after having a collision on Friday afternoon.

It's believed that two cars collided just after 4pm with one of the cars going over the embankment.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said "Three patients were assessed, with one flown to Cairns Hospital for spinal precautions."

Police had to clear a space south of the crash site for the helicopter to retrieve the patient.

The crash took place about 1km south of the Henry Ross lookout and the Kennedy highway was closed in both directions for about 3 hours.

The 21 year old woman is in a stable condition in Cairns hospital and the Forensic Crash Unit is now investigating.
