Australia is known for its big things, like the big pineapple, the big barramundi and now the Tablelands can add the big avocado to the list.

Atherton farmer John Gallo said he started thinking about the idea of building a big avocado two years ago and when he mentioned it to his grandson, who thought it was a great idea.

“When we had the COVID lockdown, we couldn’t go anywhere so building it was a great way to keep me occupied.”

“We started building in March, but I got a bit distracted during the avocado season and finally last week we got to put it up.”

John said the structure is 5.2 metres high and made out of steel and oyster netting.

“I had to build it on its side as I didn’t have any scaffolding,” he said.

“The oyster netting gives it that Hass Avocado look and feel.

“If it hadn’t of been for the lockdown I probably would never have done it.”

So far the reception has been positive from locals and passing traffic and John also said the Big Avocado will have several uses.

“When it’s 100 per cent complete It will actually be a roadside stall,” he said

“It will have a door and some shelves so that we can sell fruit from it.”

The Big Avocado is at 8560 Kennedy Highway in Atherton.
