RACEGOERS finally got the chance to enjoy a day at the races after the Mareeba Annuals were hosted on Saturday, making it one of the first races in the region this Spring.
RACEGOERS finally got the chance to enjoy a day at the races after the Mareeba Annuals were hosted on Saturday, making it one of the first races in the region this Spring.
The day saw a crowd of 500 racegoers return to the Mareeba Turf Club to socialise off track and see live racing action on track, which for some was the first time in 2020.
Mareeba Turf Club President Rex Petersen was happy with how the day turned out without any major issues.
“The weather was perfect and we had a very smooth race day without any major issues,” he said.
“We only had a capacity of 500 people and we normally get about 1,200 people out to a race day.
“So we had to turn a lot of people away but we still had a good crowd that were excited to see some racing.”
The Class B Handicap started off the day which was won by The Frontier ridden by Emily Class, Bold Expectations ridden by Chelsea Jokic was behind on a 1.0 margin while third place went to Style Line ridden by Stephen Wilson.
Race 2 was the Maiden Plate which was won by Kensington Gold ridden by Krysten Swaffer with Amelia’s Rainbow ridden by Shohei Kaya following behind and Super Dancer ridden by Chelsea Jokic bringing up third.
Race 3 was the Class B Handicap 1500m which went to Forgiato ridden by Bonnie Thomson by a major 3.8 margin lead ahead of Misprint ridden by Shohei Kaya who was followed by Newstead ridden by Krysten Swaffer.
Race 4 was The Mareeba Cup and was narrowly won by Yankee Tango ridden by Pietro Romeo with Crocodile Shoes ridden by Kate Southam behind on a 0.1 margin while Arms Race Ridden by Krysten Swaffer sloted into third.
The Bracelet Benchmark was the final race of the day and was won by Cool Attitude ridden by Bonnie Thomson in close competition with Dream I Can ridden by Shane Pawsey with Speed Eight ridden by Stephen Wilson coming in third.
