THE Great Wheelbarrow Race is on the right track for it’s return in 2022 as four new members have been appointed to the volunteer organising committee.

Due to COVID restrictions the regions massive race did not go ahead in 2020 or 2021 due to a lack of nominations and the events temporary one day format.

Now Mareeba Shire Council (MSC) has thrown more support behind the event agreeing to fill vacancies left by some of the retiring committee members.

MSC Councillor and chair of the committee Locky Bensted was overwhelmed with the support for the return of the race.

“Council agreed to fill the vacancies on the Committee, so we went out to the community seeking Expressions of Interest,” he said.

“We are overwhelmed by the level of community support for this special and unique event that takes teams to the important small towns in the Shire."

“We are now ready to bring the Race back, but if there is someone out there who has a burning desire to join the Committee, I encourage them to get in touch.”
