A night of ‘big little chats’

AFTER a small hiatus, Pecha Kucha is in full swing again with a great line-up of presenters this Friday night bringing the promise of laughs, perhaps tears, intrigue and camaraderie.

The popular event held at the Function Room of the Atherton Hotel follows the Pecha Kucha concept (which means “big little chats” in Japanese) – a structured storytelling format including a time limit and the use of strong images.

It was developed by Tokyo-based architects in 2003 to provide a fast, engaging way to present work without losing audience attention.

Now a world-wide social activity, it brings people from all walks of life together to share stories, experiences and observations.

“The night revolves around our guest speakers presenting, with just over six minutes to explore their chosen topic accompanied by a series of 20 slides,” organisers said this week.

“It’s smooth, it’s sharp, it’s fresh and it’s entertainment at its best.”

Volume Thirteen will welcome Peter Jaggard, an eclectic record collector and audiophile; Olivia Day, a bird trainer; and Helen Irvine with her topic – the Greta Thunberg Effect, amongst others.

“Bring Mum, bring Grandma, bring the teenagers, or your besties for a great night out. You may just realise that you have a story of your own that needs to be told,” a spokesperson said.

The Pecha Kucha night begins at 7pm sharp on Friday 8 May. Tickets are $10, concession $8 and children free and are available from Humanitix, with a very limited number available at the door from 6pm. The restaurant is open from 5pm for those dining.
