A proposal from Mareeba Community Housing Company (MCHC) to construct two one-bedroom units in the Aged Housing Reserve at 7 Lyons St was approved by the Mareeba Shire Council at its recent meeting.

“Councillors, you are all aware of the extreme housing shortage of aged housing in our shire, and we welcome these additional units for our senior citizens,” Deputy Mayor Lenore Wyatt said during the meeting.

“This is extra, on top of what we’re already doing, with the three one-bedroom units still happening over in Doyle St.

“We’ve done the two two-bedroom units... and now potentially this as well, it’s fantastic news.”

Council endorsed the MCHC plan, which provides extra leverage for the organisation to apply for a grant through the Department of Housing & Public Works, Queensland Community Housing Investment Pipeline program.

“In a world where - I’ve just been down to Victoria and all they talked about was the housing crisis for our aged - we’re doing some great things in collaboration with Mareeba Community Housing,” Cr Wyatt said.

“That has been a wonderful divestment, in terms of partnering with somebody who really, that’s their core business.

“These people (at MCHC) are doing an amazing job.”
