All in the Christmas spirit
ST Vincent de Paul Society Queensland members and volunteers from Atherton and Mareeba rolled up their sleeves last week to pack Christmas hampers for local families doing it tough, bringing the true spirit of Christmas to those who need it most.

Thanks to the dedication of 140 members, 307 volunteers and generous donors, the society has supported 19,721 vulnerable people in Far North Queensland this year, providing essential services like emergency accommodation, food assistance and access to vital support programs.
As the cost-of-living crisis continues, Christmas is becoming more stressful than joyful for many families.
Atherton Conference president Kevin Garland said the Christmas hampers gave families breathing room during what should be the happiest time of year.
“In our region, we know how quickly things can become difficult for families when unexpected costs hit,” he said.
“A hamper might seem simple, but it lifts an enormous weight, putting food in the cupboard and gifts under the tree so parents can focus on being with their children instead of worrying about making ends meet.
“We’re thankful for the generosity of our donors, whose support means we can offer that relief to local families who just need a bit of support to get through a tough patch at the most expensive time of year.”
Cairns Diocesan Deacon Peter de Haas, who participated in the Mareeba hamper packing, said the Christmas Appeal showed Far North Queensland families they have a community standing with them.
“When volunteers take the time to deliver these hampers and sit with families, it makes a real difference. People feel seen, supported and connected to their community,” he said.
“We’re fortunate to have such a generous community in Far North Queensland whose support allows us to serve families across the region, ensuring Christmas is a time of celebration.”
In 2024, the Society hand-delivered 5,776 Christmas hampers across the state.
