Atherton on the up
ATHERTON Cricket Club has jumped to fourth on the ladder after going two-for-two at the weekend, while the Mareeba Bandits still remain winless.

The clubs played two games each at the weekend, with Sunday being the first local derby for the season. Atherton found good wins against last year’s premiers, Norths, and the Bandits, while Mareeba went down to Cyclones and Atherton.
ATHERTON vs MAREEBA
The first local derby of the season was a heater, with Atherton claiming game one at Borzi Park, Mareeba by 45 runs.
Atherton won the toss and elected to bat first. The game got off to a slow start as both sides eased into the competition, but after the fall of three quick wickets, things were looking up for the Bandits.
That was until captain Tom Boorman and Brendan Nasser took to the crease. Boorman scored a quick 29 off 22 balls, including three 4s and two 6s. Nasser notched up 24 from 57 balls.
Adding more runs to Atherton’s tally was Cam Davis and Mason Blaney, who scored 28 from 54 and 31 from 38 respectively. Brandon Green (19-not-out off 21) and Reece Johnston (17-not-out off 12) also proved helpful. Atherton finished 8/182 after 40 overs.
It took a while for the Bandits to get the ball rolling in their batting innings, with the openers combining for 17 runs and the next in line getting out for a duck.
Captain Brendan Falvo and Brendan Payne picked up some good scores though, scoring 26 from 80 and 36 from 36 respectively. Youngster Kye Harris also showed effort, scoring 19 from 24.
Mareeba were unable to get the job done and finished 8/137 after 40 overs, leaving Atherton to claim victory in the first local derby match.

ATHERTON vs NORTHS
Atherton took on last year’s premiers at Loder Park, Atherton on Saturday in a game that went down to the final over.
The reigning champs went out to bat first, and with a big help from opening batsman Coby Edmonstone, who scored 112-not-out from 109 balls, they finished their 40 overs 7/208.
Atherton were slow off the mark in their batting innings, with opening batsman Alex Nasser leaving the pitch early after a golden duck.
But it was captain Tom Boorman and Brendan Nasser who picked things up. Boorman came out firing and scored 83 runs off 76 balls, including 10 4s and a 6. Nasser scored 58-not-out off 78 balls, including a game-winning 4 on the second-last ball.
Atherton finished 5/211, taking down Norths by just three runs.
MAREEBA vs CYCLONES
The Mareeba Bandits took on the Cyclones at Borzi Park, Mareeba on Saturday and were simply outclassed in a dominant showing by the Cassowary Coast side.
The visitors went out to bat first, and with help from a handy century off 76 balls from batsman Tony Ura, they put up a hefty score of 8/276 after 40 overs.
Mareeba’s opening batsmen Tristan Lopez and Will Hanlon got out to a good start, scoring 42 from 40 and 20 from 18 respectively.
Captain Brendan Falvo also had a good stint, scoring 55-not-out off 92 balls. The Bandits just didn’t have the firepower to chase down Cyclone’s score but managed 187 runs before the end of their 40 overs.
This weekend, the Bandits will host the Rovers at Borzi Park from 12.30pm on Saturday, and Atherton will take on Barron River in Trinity Beach from 12.30pm, Saturday.
