Josiah “Joey” Dixon is a 17-year-old Mareeba boy known for his hard work ethic and his talent for triathlons.

He was recently selected to represent Australia at the prestigious World Triathlon Championship Finals in Wollongong from 15-19 October.

Since the age of 15, he has shouldered all of his triathlon expenses himself, covering weekly coaching, equipment, and race costs, demonstrating his dedication and discipline to the sport.

Now, as he steps onto the world stage, the costs involved run into the thousands of dollars and he is asking his community to back him.

“Doing well at Worlds would be life changing for me because it can open the door to so many opportunities,” Dixon said.

“I love being an Aussie, so I’d be very proud to represent my country. I believe we’re very lucky in this country to have access to sports and I’m privileged to be able to do what I do.

“My biggest goal in life is to become a professional triathlete. I’m surrounded by so many supportive people and I’m grateful that I’ve learned so young the kinds of habits and lifestyle I need to have to develop into an athlete.”

Dixon trains for about 15-16 hours a week, usually broken into 1-3 sessions a day. He said that most weekends his combined training is equivalent to more than a half Ironman.

“I really love endurance, so the long sessions are very enjoyable, but definitely hard,” he said.

“I love my training, and I enjoy the people I train with who push me and encourage me. All the races I do are a good way to build my competitiveness and test out my progress.”
