Audio guide brings village past to life
FROM the hum of a blacksmith’s forge to the lively buzz of village life, the Historic Village Herberton’s new audio guide will bring the past to life for visitors of all ages.

With engaging stories and authentic soundscapes, this guide transforms a stroll through the Historic Village into an authentic walk through time.
Imagine wandering through the beautifully preserved buildings, hearing the clink of a blacksmith’s hammer, the chatter from a bustling general store, or the hum of an old-time radio.
The audio guide brings the Historic Village to life, allowing visitors to see, hear and feel what life was like for the Tropical North’s early settlers.
Village owners Craig and Connie Kimberley said the audio guide was the latest addition in a series of storytelling experiences available to visitors.
It builds on the launch of Herberton, Heart of the North in 2023, a cinematic experience that tells the story of Herberton’s history on the big screen.
“The audio guide completes the storytelling journey we have been building, allowing visitors to experience Herberton’s history in an interactive and engaging way,” Craig said.
“It takes storytelling into every corner of the village, alongside interpretive signage that adds depth to each exhibit.”
Packed with rich tales from Herberton’s early pioneering days, Craig said listeners would hear more about local figures including John Newell and the significance of landmarks like Elderslie House.
“We hope it encourages people to take their time, explore and connect with the fascinating stories that are unique to our region,” he said.
Listeners will also be able to learn about the people who lived and worked in the village’s buildings, with easy-to-follow stories that bring the past to life.
The Audio Guide project was made possible with the assistance of an Accessible Tourism Infrastructure Grant.
The guide is flexible, allowing the user to explore at their own pace and in any direction. There is over two hours of audio covering 62 stops on the village map.
The audio guide is further supported by an accessibility guide, which highlights the accessible buildings and areas throughout Historic Village Herberton, ensuring that visitors of all abilities can enjoy the experience.
