Mr Khan released his very first book, Born to the North and the Rising Sun, earlier this year. The book is dedicated to those born west of Mareeba who fought for Australia in the Boer War (1899-1902), World War I, and World War II.

The author just recently reached his goal of raising $10,000 from book sales and donated it to Legacy FNQ.

“I was quite surprised. I thought if I could get to $10,000, I’d be really happy, and anything over and above that later on is just icing on the cake,” he said.

“It seemed a long way off at the start. As it got closer and the sales died down a bit, I was thinking, ‘Am I ever going to reach the target?’.

“Then I got a rush of a couple of sales, and it got me to that point, which was great. I was just relieved that I was able to hit that goal after setting it for myself.

“I’m so overwhelmed for the support and the interest from people in our military history, especially people who were born in this area.

“Everything we can do to help recognise their service and keep their memory alive, that pleases me even more.”

FNQ Legacy representative Mel was both surprised and excited to receive Mr Khan’s generous gift, which will “greatly assist in caring for the families of local veterans”.

Mr Khan has sold about 185 of his 250 books to date. Copies are available at Nextra Mareeba News, Tolga Historical Museum, and Camp 64 in Dimbulah.
