Award-winning Coondoo St upgrade
KURANDA’S Coondoo Street upgrade has won a major award from the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australasia, Queensland and Northern Territory.

To a round of applause, Mayor Angela Toppin congratulated the team of staff who worked on the project at last month’s council meeting as the trophy was admired.
“It’s a wonderful award,” she said. “It was totally unexpected.
“We put it forward and it was assessed against about eight or nine other contestants.
“We tend to get bogged down with getting the work done and you don’t see the good until you step away.”
The Coondoo Street streetscape upgrade in Kuranda featured improved street lighting, footpaths and fairy lights in the heritage-listed fig trees, which has enhanced both safety and main street appeal.
The awards were presented at a gala dinner last month.
Kuranda remains in the spotlight with a council consultation survey recently distributed for feedback on a new community precinct project.
The council has received funding to build a playground within the site of the Old Kuranda State School. The site also lends itself to catering for multiple age recreational space.
