Beef day brings business
STUD operators reported a keen interest from commercial cattle producers looking to do business at this year’s Tablelands Better Beef Open Day.
The recent 8th annual Better Beef Open Day was another success, with 11 studs participating and a total of 12 breeds showcased.
From stud operators and commercial cattle producers to hobby cattle farmers, hundreds from all over the far north once again turned out to scout some of the region’s best quality cattle.
In previous years, typical Tablelands weather had made for some wet and windy Open Days, however, attendees were pleased to enjoy this year’s event under sunny skies.
Open Day president Nick Trompf said many new faces were present among those attending the studs.
“A number of breeders have commented that while there may have been less attendees than in some previous years, there was an increase in those there to do business,” he said.
“As a result of the day, elite bulls and females from many studs have been sold across a wide area, reinforcing the Atherton Tablelands as the beef seedstock capital of northern Australia.”
On show during the day were fast-growing, premium breeds such as Brangus and Ultra Blacks as well as the reliable Santa Gertrudis.
Attendees also had their pick for elite meat quality, with plenty of Angus, Red Angus, Murray Grey, Speckle Park, and Shorthorn options.
This includes cattle from two studs that participated in the event for the first time this year – DBF Farms Speckle Park and Sahara Brahmans.
