Big bash planned for Bulls 80th
ONE of the region’s longest-standing sporting clubs is marking 80 years of football this year, with an in-house documentary and major anniversary event planned as part of the celebrations.

The Mareeba United Football Club, more affectionately known as the Bulls, was founded in 1946 and has been a cornerstone of the local football community for generations, fostering talent, passion, and lifelong friendships across Far North Queensland.
Preparations are already underway for the club’s 80th anniversary celebrations, with Saturday 24 October pencilled in as the date for a major commemorative event at the club’s history-rich and memory-filled venue, Borzi park.
A special documentary is also in the making – capturing the stories, achievements, and spirit of Mareeba United across its eight decades.
Two of the club’s 1962-63 legends, Mario Battistin and Frank Ius, have already been interviewed about their trials, triumphs, and dedication to the club.
The documentary concept is being led by father and son duo Sandro and Robby Soncin who are excited to bring the club’s rich history to life on screen.
“It’s something pretty special, and to be able to bring some of their stories and passion to life on the screen that can be shared and viewed forever gives me goosebumps thinking about what we are going to see and hear,” Sandro said.
The documentary will span every era of the club’s history.
“We are planning on interviewing as many key people as possible who have been part of the club across the 80 years,” Robby said.
“We’re going to showcase the club’s early years, the State League era, the glory years from 1998 to 2008, and interview committee members, players, and coaches as well. There’s so much history that makes our club so special.”
The major anniversary celebration is expected to attract former players and members from across Australia. Event organising committee member Alex Srhoj said the occasion will be a true homecoming for many.
“It’s going to be huge and something very special,” he said.
“Players and members from Perth to Melbourne will be making the trip back home to help celebrate 80 years of Mareeba United Football Club.”
The club is encouraging past players, officials, supporters, and families to stay connected as more details about the anniversary event and documentary release are announced throughout the year.
