Big rewards reaped for small producers
A BOUTIQUE Tablelands food producer has picked up a Silver and Gold Medal at the 2026 Melbourne Royal Australian Food Awards.
Greedy Goat Homestead won a Silver Medal for its Smokey BBQ Sauce and a Gold Medal for its Balsamic Beetroot Relish.
Established on 26 acres near Malanda, Greedy Goat Homestead is the vision of Josephine and Jason Case who handcraft premium sauces, vinaigrettes and other products straight from their home kitchen, using local ingredients whenever possible.
“This is the first time the family-owned business has entered the prestigious competition,” Jo said.
“We are thrilled to be a gold medallist, as it really confirms that all the hard work is paying off and our products are of a high standard.”
Jo said the dream started on a property at Gordonvale.
“On a one-acre block in Gordonvale, my children were drinking on average four litres of milk a day. Being tired of going to the store to buy milk constantly, I decided to buy my first milking cow,” she said.
“The morning after buying miss moo, my first milking experience consisted of me on a stool beside my cow with an iPad next to me with a how-to milk a cow video.
“She produced nine litres a day so I had to learn how to make cheese, butter, yogurt and cream.
“The next thing from there was a veggie garden and that is where my journey of being as self-sustainable as possible started.
“What was a hobby turned into a dream of owning a homestead when I met Jason. Sharing the same beliefs, we set off on our journey that would end in the Malanda countryside.”
