Lions members recognised at celebration

AS the Mareeba Lions Club celebrated their 60th Charter Anniversary Dinner last Monday, it was a chance to acknowledge those who have made a significant contribution to Lions.

One such honour which is steeped in tradition is being named a Life Member of Lions International, an honour which long-serving Lions Club members Ron Blundell and David Mills were the recipients of on Monday night.

Life Membership of Lions International is granted to a member who has maintained continuous active membership as a Lion for 20 or more years and has rendered outstanding service to the community and the Lions Association.

Mr Blundell’s involvement in the Mareeba Lions Club has been all-encompassing since joining the club in 1978, most notably of which includes being a member of the committee which envisaged and built the Mareeba Heritage Centre.

Added to that, Mr Blundell has been recognised by the club with a Melvin Jones Fellowship and a Richardson Award.

Fellow Lions International inductee Mr Mills has also been recognised by the Mareeba Lions Club with a Melvin Jones Fellowship Award, and has served in the roles of Director, Treasurer and President in his relatively short time with the Mareeba-based club.

Mr Mills joined Lions in 1979, however didn’t transfer to the Mareeba Lions Club until 2011.

Despite only having an eight year tenure with the club in Mareeba, Mr Mills has managed to make a considerable impact within the community.

Other Mareeba Lions members recognised on the night were Gilbert Teitzel and Enrico Cabassi, who received a certificate for 25 and 15 years of service respectively.

While Monday’s event provided the opportunity to celebrate the wonderful work Mareeba Lions Club members have done for many decades, it also saw new members welcomed to the club.

One such person who was invited to become a member of the Mareeba Lions Club was Lindsay Reedman.

Mr Reedman was presented his emblem pin by his sponsor Tom Braes, therefore signifying his membership of the club.

Mareeba Lions Club President Denis McKinley said they are extremely proud and happy to have Lindsay as a member.
