Bridge back in action

A RAIL bridge that was stopping the Savannahlander from getting passengers near Forsayth has been fixed, just a few months after Member for Cook David Kempton secured $500,000 in funding to repair the structure.

In late August, Mr Kempton announced his government would fund the repairs to the Copperfield Bridge which was forcing the popular tourist train to stop at Einasleigh and then take passengers on a one-hour bus ride to Forsayth to see sights such as the Cobbold Gorge.

“Well folks, the work is done and from the first trip next year, the train will travel over this bridge to Wirra Wirra,” Mr Kempton said in a Facebook post last week.

Wirrra Wirra is only a short drive to Forsayth.

The bridge, which has been damaged by several weather events in the past few years, is one of several bridges that have to be fixed between Kuranda and Mareeba, and High Bridge, around 7km before Forsayth, to allow the train to do its full journey.

That would allow passengers to see some of the most beautiful scenery along the journey including Delaney Gorge and the Newcastle Range.

Fixing the Copperfield Bridge, which allows the train to remain viable, is key to securing more funds to fix the remaining bridges, according to Mr Kempton.
