Bulls back in action
THE Mareeba Bulls will be back in action on home turf this weekend as they host Leichhardt Football Club in the first hit out for the season.

The Mareeba United Football Club is gearing up for a big first round of competition at their home ground, Lindsay Australia Stadium, this week, with the Women’s side kicking things off on Friday night, followed by the Men on Saturday evening.
Women’s head coach Christian Mukadi said this year’s squad was one of the most exciting groups he has worked with, driven by the development of younger players coming through the system.
“What makes this squad exciting this season is the development of our younger players over the past two years,” he said.
“Many of them are now pushing for starting positions which has strengthened the overall level of the team. We have a good balance between experienced players and younger players who are hungry to prove themselves.”
The team has placed a strong focus on structure and fitness throughout pre-season, building clarity in how the side wants to play.
“Our expectations are clear – we want to finish in the top three and be strong contenders in the finals,” Mukadi said.
Last season’s heartbreaking semi-final loss in the final seconds of extra time has become motivation for the group heading into the new campaign.
Fans can expect strong contributions from experienced players including Daina, Teesha, Katia, Nicole, and Shaq, while the return of Olivia from injury provides an important boost.
Mukadi is also excited about the next generation of Bulls talent.
“Leksi has something to prove this season. We even have a friendly bet about her reaching 25 goals,” he said.
“Scarlett has shown at training she can add goals to her game, while Lene’s work rate has been vital in strengthening our defence. Madison Buschgraber also has the ability to become one of our most versatile players.”
The Bulls Women kick off their season this Friday night from 7pm at Lindsay Australia Stadium, Mareeba.
Meanwhile, the Bulls Men are out to prove themselves this season. Head coach Victor Madrid believes his squad has taken an important step forward in maturity and understanding heading into 2026.
“The biggest evolution has been in our maturity and game understanding,” he said.
“Last season we were building our identity; this year the group has become more disciplined in our structure and there is a stronger connection between players. The standards at training have definitely lifted.”
The Bulls will open their season against Leichhardt in what Madrid expects to be a tough and physical contest.
“Round 1 is always unpredictable. Fitness, cohesion, and match sharpness all play a part,” he said.
“Our challenge will be staying composed, sticking to our structures and managing the game.”
Madrid highlighted the squad’s unity and willingness to improve as a key strength.
“I’m proud of their togetherness and willingness to learn. The players are always asking questions and looking to develop as individuals and as teammates.”
New signing Josh Mulla joins the squad from Leichhardt, while Braith De Faveri returns after a year away. Young players Isaac Thompson and Robbie Iacutone are also pushing for opportunities.
Leadership will also be a major focus for the Bulls this season.
“It’s not just about the captain – we’re building leadership across the whole squad. Players are stepping up to organise, set standards at training, and lead in tough moments.”
Madrid also had a message for the Bulls faithful ahead of the new season.
“Stick with us. This group is committed and you’ll see a team that works hard, plays brave football, and represents the Bulls badge with pride,” he said.
“We’re building something strong here and the support from our community makes a huge difference.”
The Bulls Men will take the field Saturday afternoon, with the Under 23s kicking off at 5pm, followed by the Men at 7pm.
