Call to support young gymnasts

The local club attended the recent South Cairns Halloween Invitational for the first time under its new not-for-profit status and blew the competition out of the park, with every gymnast earning a place on apparatus.

The value of the club’s performance programs was certainly made known – boasting overall champions in four out of six divisions it had competitors in.

“Gymnastics Atherton is truly established in our performance programs, with our gymnasts placing in State Championships even though they are training significantly less than gymnasts in city regions,” club president Cherie Mills said.

“This is a testament to the quality and culture provided by our wonderful coaches and club. We have an amazing, supportive, family-like culture where every member matters.

“The support from our families and members is amazing, and the way our gymnasts support each other with their successes and struggles is an absolute delight to see.”

But without support from the community, the club cannot purchase better and safer equipment for its gymnasts or further enhance its performance programs.

“We desperately need to upgrade a lot of our equipment to maintain the quality of our programs as well as the safety for all our gymnasts,” Mills said.

“Each apparatus needs a certain amount of matting to ensure our gymnasts can train in a safe environment. This matting can be in the tens of thousands of dollars for just one apparatus.”
