Air Force Liaison Officer, Wing Commander Richard Korner is encouraging young north Queenslanders to consider joining the Australian Air Force Cadets.

Wing Commander Korner didn’t begin his career in the skies, quite the contrary really, he started out studying rocks as a geologist. But after a downturn in the industry pushed him to explore new options, he joined the Air Force as a logistician.

Almost 25 years later and Wing Commander Korner is now shaping the next generation as an Air Force Liaison Officer (AFLO) with the Australian Air Force Cadets (AAFC).

As the 1 Wing AFLO, he plays a critical role in supporting more than 500 cadets across north Queensland.

“If you like talking to people and want to be part of an organisation that helps to develop our Australian youth, then this is a great place to be,” Wing Commander Korner said.

“The cadets are always so excited to see and do things they wouldn’t normally do in their day-to-day lives, like our flying program where they can get their licence for drones.

“Cadets also learn skills in leadership and development. I’ve seen a lot come through who are now in the Air Force, which is fantastic.”

Liaison officers are the bridge between the Air Force and the AAFC. They are mentors, role models and leaders, helping to deliver one of Australia’s most respected youth development programs.

The AAFC welcomes cadets from all backgrounds, and AFLOs reflect that same diversity.

“Whether you’ve come from a technical trade, logistics, aviation, or another field, what matters most is your passion for youth development and community engagement,” Wing Commander Korner said.

“The ability not to be chained behind a desk – I get out and meet a lot of people and really enjoy that.

“The opportunity to help develop the youth of Australia through the Air Force Cadet program is a real privilege.”
