Candles to light up solidarity

SKIES will glow with the gentle light of candles across the state tonight as communities honour those whose lives have been tragically affected by domestic and family violence.

Queensland’s Domestic and Family Violence Prevention month begins with ceremonies on the first Wednesday of May, and are held exactly at 6pm so people can unite and remember women, children, and men who have suffered at the hands of domestic and family violence.

In Mareeba, the community will mark the event at the 100 Park near the Mareeba Arts Society Building, and are asked to arrive by 5.40pm.

Atherton will hold a ceremony at Anzac Park, in Main Street from 5.40pm, and in Cairns residents can gather at the Wharf 1 Café on Wharf St from 5.30pm.

Organised by the Cairns Regional Domestic Violence Service, which has offices in both Cairns and Mareeba, the ceremonies are a “powerful act of solidarity”.

“Candlelight ceremonies illuminate the night, symbolising our shared commitment to preventing further instances of domestic and family violence,” organiser Courtney said.

“It’s a powerful reminder that these losses are not inevitable - they are preventable. And it is up to each of us to raise awareness, educate ourselves and others, and actively work towards fostering safer, more supportive communities for all.”

Domestic and Family Violence Prevention month is observed every May in Queensland and aims to raise awareness, highlight available support services, and encourage community involvement in preventing violence.

Among the activities held around the state are candlelight vigils, the Darkness to Daylight Run, and information forums.
