Cemetery volunteers up for State award
A GROUP of volunteers who have breathed new life into the Mareeba Pioneer Cemetery have been nominated for the 2026 Queensland Volunteer Awards.

The group has refurbished hundreds of graves at the cemetery over the last few years, winning them the People’s Choice – Community Group of the Year award at the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce awards in November 2025.
“After the overwhelming amount of support from our members, we are humbly hoping that our band of volunteers will be recognised now within a State level,” project coordinator Michael Musumeci said.
“It’s just not every day a community bands to together in so many ways to make a Pioneer Cemetery shine like Mareeba for all the right reasons.”
The Queensland Volunteer Awards will be announced at a function in Brisbane City Hall on 15 May.
