NEARLY a year ago events were being cancelled left right and centre, but the Atherton Show was downgraded to something smaller and simpler, a decision that got them a runner up innovation award.

At the recent 2021 Queensland Show Awards in Roma the Atherton Tableland Agricultural Society was runner up in the Best Innovation of a Local Event Award for their pop-up show in 2020.

The pop-up show was born from the ashes of their cancelled 2020 Atherton Show, the committee made the decision to run a smaller event coinciding with the COVID regulations at the time.

The pop-up show took place over the July school holidays and many kids dragged their parents down to the showgrounds for some small-scale show fun.

Atherton Show Society Event Coordinator Kylie Lang was excited to have received the award even though it was only as the runner-up.

“It was awesome even though it was runner up we will still take that,” she said.

“This is the first year that they’ve held the Best Innovation of a Local Event award.

“To know that your appreciated and people like what you do, we were all over the moon.”

The Atherton Show Society was proud to be picked out of a pool of over 100 shows in Queensland for the award.

Although their new pop-up show scored them some points the Atherton Show Society is looking forward to bringing the full-scale Atherton Show back, bigger and better.
