A DIFFERENT type of working dog that’s Kool by name and nature will get its time to shine during upcoming workshops this month in Mareeba. This will be the 10th year the Koolie Club has held its Stockdog herding workshops locally.

Well-known trainer Tony Cock, who manages a station near Theodore in Central Queensland will again run the workshops, which will be conducted from September 14- 20 at the Mareeba Pony Club.

“The aim of these workshops is to help teach people and their dogs how to work stock with their working breed dogs,” event spokesperson Kylie Wilson told The Express.

“The event attracts a diverse group of participants from near and far.

“We have many local property owners, station owners and staff from the Cape and Western Queensland and also many interstate participants.

“Our event also attracts many suburban herding enthusiasts that want to broaden their horizons and try a new hobby with their best friend.”

The spokesperson said the workshops also have another purpose.

“The Koolie is one of the lesser known breeds of Australian Working dogs,” Ms Wilson explained.

“We are trying to bring this fantastic breed out of the shadows and show their versatility as a working dog.

“Koolies make great assets to a working team, as they have great drive and are always looking to please.”
