When baby Caroline Mari Judith Snelling was born into the world on November 14, not only was she a welcome addition to Glen and Hitomi Snelling of Tolga, she was also the first girl to be born into the Snelling family in 168 years.

Baby Caroline’s nearest female relatives are her great aunts who were born in 1848 and 1852 and she has inherited their names.

The Snelling family originated from Dorset in England and Caroline’s grandfather moved to Australia in 1967, he now has three grandsons and one welcome granddaughter.

Proud father Glen said that having a female in the family was a great addition.

“We have one boy and now one girl, to find another girl you have to go back to 1852,” he said.

“As soon as we got the first scan to find out if it was a girl, the reaction was unbelievable.

“My brother and I both spoke about seeing if we can break the record and have a girl, but he has two boys and I’ve now got one of each.”

Baby Caroline is healthy, feeding well and putting on weight but as for having a go for another girl, all Glen can say is, “It’s a little too early to say just yet, so I will just say maybe.”

Glen and Hitomi said they would like to thank the midwife and medical staff at the Mareeba hospital and also the helicopter crew and the emergency department at The Cairns Hospital for their tender care and professional support following Caroline’s birth.
