Mareeba State School Principal Hannah Simpson is excited for a mural to be done on the outside of the old school hall.

Mareeba State School is on track to have a new mural painted on their old school hall, depicting the school’s history and what happens inside the gates.

Currently the old school hall’s back wall sticks out like a sore thumb on the Constance Street side of the school, Principal Hannah Simpson has plans to change that.

She has enlisted the help of the community and a past teacher aid with impressive artistic talent to give the kids and parents something to admire.

The mural will take inspiration from the school’s history, students, classes, activities and even community suggestions.

“We know that it’s important to have an environment that the kids feel welcome in,” Mrs Simpson said.

“This year we’re all about invigorating our environment and that’s what we’re trying to do here.

“My hopes are to have this school beautified in every aspect.”

Mrs Simpson is hoping that teachers will be able to utilize the wall as a teaching point when it is fully finished.

Loretta Scamolla has been given the task to bring the schools vision for its mural to life, a job which she is quite suited for according to Mrs Simpson.

“Loretta was formally one of our prep teacher aids and she’s exceptionally creative,” she said.

“She’s putting all those ideas together in a rolling mural along the wall.”

“We used her expertise while she was onsite and now, she’s going to help us do this.”

This mural is just the first of many that is planned for MSS as they enact their vision of a visual learning experience for both the students and the community.
