Community support for flood victims
THOSE who have been affected by flooding over the past two months are invited to a Mareeba Flood Support Group being held next Thursday, 15 February.
The group will be held at the Royals Church in Mareeba, allowing flood victims to share their experiences over light refreshments and access resources to help them move forward.
Organiser Amy McDonald said the event would help victims feel a sense of community, helping them focus on their mental health in a time of struggle.
“I have been collecting donations for families on the Tablelands with a group of ladies and thought it would be a good idea to hold a face-to-face meet-up for flood-affected families to talk about their experiences with other people who have gone through the same situation,” she said.
“It’s great for their mental health, and also, not everyone affected have people to talk to, so this is a great opportunity to let go of some of those emotions.
“On the day, we can talk about moving forward and give out info for organisations that can help get through the next steps.
“I have organised some frozen meals for people affected and can ask these families questions about what else needs to be sourced regarding donations.
“I really would love for anybody affected by the disaster to come along, and I can’t wait to meet everybody.”
