In October’s meeting, councillors moved to buy the land at $185,000 based on a market evaluation provided by the Department of Education after the land was deemed surplus to the state.

A report to council said the 8,757m2 site was “strategically important” to both the community and the council, as it provided the only road access for maintaining the Barron River Esplanade and supporting future infrastructure needs.

“It has also been identified through the Kuranda Walking Network Plan and Kuranda Community Precinct development as a potential location to deliver improved access to the Kuranda River Walk,” the report said.

“This includes providing a safer, more accessible alternative to the existing steep stair access, particularly for people with disabilities.”

The vacant land has primary frontage to Arara Street and is adjoined to the east by road reserve, the railway line and the Barron River. The land backs onto Jum Rum Creek and to the west is adjoined by Kuranda Sewage Treatment Plant.
