“Stories of Jasper...Three Years On” revisits the impact of the cyclone in December 2023 and the unprecedented rainfall event associated with the system.

Through interviews with residents, emergency responders and community leaders, it reflects on one of the region’s most significant natural disasters and explores the recovery journey that followed.

In the direct aftermath of Cyclone Jasper and the flooding, Mareeba Shire Council received more than 900 calls from residents seeking assistance and information, including 185 requests for emergency support.

Mareeba Mayor Angela Toppin said the documentary provided an important opportunity to reflect on the challenges faced by the community and the resilience shown during recovery.

“Tropical Cyclone Jasper had a profound impact on our region, affecting homes, businesses, infrastructure and livelihoods across the shire,” she said.

“This documentary captures the experiences of those who lived through the event and highlights the incredible efforts of emergency services, community organisations, volunteers and residents in the recovery process.

“Three years on, it is important to take a moment to reflect the lessons we have all learned and acknowledge that recovery continues for members of our community as well as through ongoing infrastructure projects.”
