Date clash for park opening

TWO days of family-friendly events, music and food will herald the official opening of the Priors Creek Parklands in Atherton in July.

But the event, to be held on 10-11 July, clashes with major celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the Gillies Range road in Yungaburra on 11 July.

Locals took to Facebook last week to complain that the multimillion-dollar project was underwhelming for the $10 million spent to date, particularly the lack of a playground and shade, while others criticised the council for scheduling the opening event on the same day as the Yungaburra event.

“Did you not check that it is the 100th year celebrations for the Gillies on 11 July. A full day of fun with historic exhibitions, kids games and a large vehicle show?” Gillies event organiser and former councillor, David Clifton, said.

“How far out of touch with your community can you get?”

“This is the first time a date for this opening has been given. What a pity it clashes with an event that has been advertised for a number of months (including last year) – even has been front page of The Express newspaper,” a woman posted, referring to the Gillies 100th birthday.

But a council spokesperson lauded the project which, he said, represented the largest precinct revitalisation in Atherton’s history.

“What began as a community-led vision and master plan in 2018 is now being realised as a premier destination for family fun, local community group activities, a year-round events calendar, and regional tourism,” he said.

“While parts of the park and amenities will progressively open over the coming months, the opening event in July will be the official turning point for what’s to come.”

When opened, the parkland will feature an open-air amphitheatre and main stage, fitness and leisure spaces, a nature walk trail, and public amenities.

“Future stages are set to deliver a regionally significant nature-based playground, a dedicated amphitheatre shell, and further interactive features designed to cement Priors Creek as a landmark destination,” the spokesperson said.

“Further details will be announced as we progress toward opening, including a vibrant and varied program of community events and interactive activities to take place in the park.”

“This development is a part of our placemaking and economic development focus which means making the Atherton Tablelands a great place to live, work, visit and invest,” TRC placemaking general manager Greg Bowden said.

“Our region boasts beautiful natural environment experiences and greenspaces of which are the envy of many other towns, and the Priors Creek Parklands are a welcome addition.”
