LANDHOLDERS are looking to drone mapping as a way to improve the health of Peterson Creek near Yungaburra.

Barron Catchment Care has organised a drone specialist to map three properties (dairy, grazing and residential) along the creek and present the findings at a workshop in Atherton on Wednesday, 10 June.

Barron Catchment Care chair Bryony Barnett said a community-based working group had been formed to seek solutions after water testing by the Yungaburra Landcare Group found high levels of sediment, faecal bacteria and phosphorous in the creek.

“This is a community-led project that recognises landowners and residents are central to the future health of Peterson Creek,” she said.

Drones could reveal previously unrecognised surface conditions, drainage patterns, and erosion risk hotspots.

“If we find opportunities to improve the health of the creek, we hope it will build the case for a government-funded program to assist landholders. But there may be actions we can take together that don’t rely on government grants,” Ms Barnett.

Grazier Michael Hoare said he was pleased to be involved in the project and was keen to see what the drone mapping reveals.

“I know where the water runs on my property and I already have contours in place – but I’m willing to learn more.”

The workshop will be held at the TRC Coordination Centre, 15 Vernon St, Atherton from 9-11 am on 10 June.

It will be followed by a farm walk on Mr Hoare’s looking at his farming practices such as multi-species pasture planting and clean farming (minimal chemical) approach.
