Exciting weekend at Herberton

HERBERTON is the place to be this weekend, with three great reasons to take the drive to the historic mining town.

Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway’s iconic Peckett Steam Train will be running throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, the region’s rich heritage will be showcased at the Far North Heritage Expo, with displays by 18 museums from across the Far North.

There will be guest speakers, live heritage demonstrations, and guided tours of the Herberton Mining Museum and the Great Northern Mine.

Families can get hands-on with kid’s gemstone activities and have a go at tin panning, then relax in the food marquee with a classic sausage sizzle.

“You won’t need to be a heritage buff to enjoy this free expo as there’s so much to see and do,” Cr Annette Haydon said.

“There’s a great line-up of activities, tours and guest speakers, and food and drink for sale.

“You can try your hand at tin panning, watch the Herberton and District Rock Drill Club’s hand steel demonstrations and see the Jirrbal Indigenous display.

“Remember to bring a small antique for appraisal, and don’t leave your rock collection at home because there’s a chance to swap rocks with others.”

The Far North Heritage Expo is on Saturday from 9am-2pm at the Herberton Mining Centre.

On Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning, the Herberton Flower and Craft Show will take centre stage at the community hall.

Visitors will be inspired by beautiful floral displays, handmade crafts, photography entries and local talent. The show is on from 12 noon-5pm Saturday and from 9am-12 noon on Sunday.

Also on Sunday is the Iron and Steam Fair at the Historic Village Herberton.

Feel the ground rumble as mighty machines and steam engines roar to life at the historic village and take a ride on the Atherton-Herberton Historic Railway’s iconic Peckett Steam Train throughout the weekend.

“Herberton has something for everyone – from history lovers and craft enthusiasts to families looking for a fun day out,” Herberton Business & Tourism Association president Gary Aylward said.

“We invite people to come for the day, or better still, stay the weekend and soak up the full Herberton experience.”
