Farmers urged on water needs
FARMERS along the Walsh River are being encouraged to take advantage of a unique opportunity to express their interest in accessing future unallocated water from the Barron catchment – at no cost and with no obligation.

The Queensland Government has made water available from general, yet-to-be-defined, and Indigenous reserves within sub-catchments E, F and G of the Barron Water Plan area.
This water is unsupplemented, meaning it is naturally flowing and not part of the Mareeba-Dimbulah Water Supply Scheme.
The process is simple: landholders can complete a short Expression of Interest (EOI) form outlining their potential water needs.
This does not commit them to purchasing water in the future but will help inform the government about local demand and shape future decisions around water releases in the region.
FNQ Growers president Joe Moro is encouraging farmers to take part.
“We are encouraging growers to complete the EOI form. There is no cost or obligation attached, but it gives the government a clear indication of the future water needs of our region,” Mr Moro said.
For many farmers in the Walsh River area, this could be a chance to secure future access to water that supports expansion, diversification, or greater resilience in agricultural operations.
Expressions of Interest are open until 31 October.
