Field day focus on soil
WET Tropics Soilcare (WETS) will be holding another Field Day this Sunday at a working avocado orchard in Tumoulin.

The next-generation farmer is planning an extension to the orchard at a site that is currently under a fast-growing, species-specific cover crop.
Preparation of the soil using new methods for the new trees will be demonstrated through use of a “pit”.
Created by digging in a selected area, the pit is a hole approximately 1m deep x 2.5 m long x 1m ide, where several soil samples will be taken at different levels.
WETS has a soil sample kit that allows for instant identification of the minerals at different levels.
Four experienced local farmers will guide attendees through various mineral uses and benefits with a question-and-answer opportunity.
WETS president Kellie Evans said interest in joining WETS is growing as farmers and gardeners become more concerned about food security.
“Growing using regenerative practices is no longer a fad; it is a hard-core fact,” she said.
“WETS is here and ready to help make the transition with real peer-to-peer experience and help.”
To join, or attend the field day as a visitor, on 25 October at Tumoulin, contact WETS via email or phone Kay on 0488 778 138. Members are free, visitors are $1.
