THE Sunday in the Park afternoon concerts at Arnold Park in Mareeba have come to an abrupt end with the final concert for September cancelled after the venue was no longer available.
Organiser of the concerts, Robert Colman, said the last of the series, due to be held this Sunday, was no longer possible, with Arnold Park undergoing an upgrade to its multi-purpose court and a refresh of its pavilions.
New pathways will also be established to improve accessibility and extend the park’s use in wet weather and new park furniture will be installed to improve comfort and amenities for users.
Mr Colman, who plays saxophone with the Hotshots Big Band, said he had come up with the idea to hold the Sunday afternoon concerts in Mareeba after the band’s reception at last year’s Mareeba Rodeo Parade, where their float had been judged ‘Grand Champion’.
Despite having to cut the series short, Mr Colman said the concerts were a good way to bring friends and family together and the band hoped to repeat the series again next year.
