First eisteddfod success
STUDENTS from Atherton State School have come away with a first place finish and two high commendations at the recent Cairns and District Junior Eisteddfod, which the school entered for the first time this year.
Not only was it the school’s first time at the event, they were also the only state school in attendance, and entered two groups of students in the drama presentation category and one into choric speaking.
Students in the drama presentation performed original skits, with one group earning first place for their performance The Battle of the Best Book Character, while the other group came away with a highly commended for The Button.
The group who performed in the choric speaking category also earned themselves a highly commended for their performance of two poems, with the adjudicator panel being “very impressed” with the expression the group showed.
“This was our first time taking students to compete in the Eisteddfod in Cairns to perform against other schools in the region,” school arts teacher Julie Williams said.
“Performing arts is an exciting and valued part of our Atherton State Primary School community. We have many programs where students are encouraged to discover and nurture their talents, build confidence and work together through creative experiences.
“These achievements are the result of many weeks of dedication, rehearsals, and teamwork. Our students represented our school with enthusiasm and pride and we learned a great deal from the experience. We cannot wait to go back again next year.”
