Forum focus on 150 years
A FORUM to officially launch the logo for the Mareeba 150th anniversary and to encourage community events and activities attracted a good cross-section of organisations last week.

Hosted by the Mareeba Chamber of Commerce and the 150th Mareeba Anniversary Advisory Committee at Mareeba Leagues Club, the event drew representatives from local business and farming operators, community service organisations, sporting and service clubs, and cultural and other locally based groups.
Advisory committee chairperson Joe Moro encouraged those present to set aside some time to plan for the unique occasion in the town’s history.
“Next year presents a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity ... to celebrate the town’s 150th anniversary of when John Atherton and his family came to this area (marking the) start of our town and community.”
The event also unveiled/launched a special logo for use throughout the year.
Together with The Express Newspaper managing editor Carl Portella, Mr Moro displayed a flag bearing the logo, as well as an array of stickers and other promotional material, that will be available for the community to display.
“Whatever your event or other use, from stickers to advertising and promotion, sporting uniforms to shirts, this logo will be available for use free of charge by contacting The Express Newspaper office on Byrnes St,” Mr Moro said.
“The committee also asks that if you are planning a celebratory event, whether it be held each year at a particular time or not, that you provide the information to the Mareeba Shire Council so the event can be promoted in the 2027 calendar of events.”
He said The Express had already begun production of a special Mareeba 150th anniversary publication as a keepsake, which would cover the town’s history, events, people and commemorative activities.
The edition is planned for an official launch on Australia Day.
