Generous agent a big supporter of refuge

A LOCAL real estate agent with a big heart is nearing his goal of raising $10,000 for the Mareeba Animal Refuge.

First National Real Estate Atherton agent Kris Crews ventured into the world of real estate a little over a year ago and did not shy away from showing people who he really is – a man with a big heart and a soft spot for rescue animals.

Immediately upon starting, he set up a plan with the local refuge to donate $200 from every home he sells to them.

As of last week, Mr Crews was at $8,600 of his $10,000 goal for the year.

Mr Crews said he chose to work with the refuge because he noticed a lack of structure and support for animal welfare in the area.

“From the start, I wanted my own marketing to support a local cause,” Mr Crews said.

“So, I needed to do something to get my name out there a little bit, and what better thing to overlap than to work with the refuge.

“It also means that every now and then I get to come over and play with the puppies and other animals.

“I’ve always had rescue dogs. So we know how awesome it is for these guys to receive that support.

“I also want to thank my partner, Miau. Without her supporting my new career choice, I wouldn’t have been able to enter the industry, let alone donate anything.”

Head of the Mareeba Animal Refuge, Jennifer Walsh, said that she “couldn’t thank Kris enough” for his kind contributions to their organisation.

“This is really a lifesaver. It truly is, I’m not exaggerating,” she said.

“It really just keeps us going because every year we make a loss, and somehow or other we’ve just got to keep on going. So this really, really helps us.

“We get no government funding whatsoever. So we are totally dependent on donations and fundraising.”
