Gillies works to start

WORKS have begun to repair 19 damaged sites along the Gillies Range Road which were caused by Cyclone Jasper and subsequent flooding events in late 2023.

Jointly funded by the Federal and State Governments through the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements, the major works include several substantial landslips.

The repairs to the range road, which are expected to be completed by mid-2027, follow the completion of slip repairs near Lake Barrine last year.

“Addressing the widespread damage caused by multiple landslips is a massive undertaking and these works mark a major milestone in the North’s recovery,” Federal Minister for Emergency Management Kristy McBain said.

Queensland Minister for Transport and Main Roads Brent Mickelberg said he was pleased the works would restore safety on the Gillies Range Road, which was an essential link between Cairns and the Atherton Tablelands.

“These range roads are vital for local communities, freight and tourism across Far North Queensland,” he said.

“We’ve carefully coordinated works across all range roads to maintain safe and reliable access while this essential reconstruction is carried out.

“We thank North Queenslanders for their patience as we deliver long term repair works to restore safety and reliability on the road.”
