Gladiators girls shine through
THE Mareeba Gladiators had something to cheer about on the weekend, with the Under 15 girls side booking a spot in this Saturday’s grand final.
The girls secured their grand final place after downing Edmonton Storm 20-10 on Friday. They will take on the Cairns Kangaroos at Barlow Park this Saturday.
The A Grade men’s side were outclassed in their match against at Davies Park on Sunday but they put up a good fight against a strong Ivanhoe Knights outfit.
The Gladiators got off to a good start with hooker Alfonse Bulkua claiming the first try in just the fourth minute of the match.
Ivanhoe’s struck back through halfback Josh Dugan. The home side followed suit, with a try of their own through centre Bronson Ryan. The Gladiators extended their lead shortly after, this time through other centre Trezman Banjo. The Smithfield side put another one on the board just shy of half time to bring the score to 16-12 heading into the break.
Ivanhoe’s proved too strong for Mareeba in the second half, scoring four tries to Mareeba’s one, with the final score 36-22.
The Gladiators Reserve Grade fell just shy of a win, losing 14-18 after a try from the Knights in the final minute of the game.
The Gladiators will head to Mossman to take on the Sharks this Sunday.
