Grand final spot still in the offing

THE Atherton Roosters Women will still get another shot to make the grand final after they went down to the Yarrabah Seahawks in a close semi-final match at the weekend.

The Roosters Women took on the minor premiership Yarrabah side in Cairns at the weekend which saw a quality game of finals footy unfold, with the Roosters falling short at 22-10.

Although the try tally showed why Yarrabah finished the regular season at the top of the table, scoring five tries to Atherton’s two, the final score was just two converted tries the difference.

“We made too many crucial errors in the wrong place on the field, and Yarrabah were just too strong for us,” Roosters Women’s coach Paul Stevens said.

The Atherton side will now look towards this weekend when they take on Cairns Kangaroos in Atherton.

These two teams faced off twice during the season, with the Kangaroos coming out on top both times (28-12 and 22-18). They were meant to clash heads again earlier in the month, but the Cairns side forfeited.

“We’ve got it at home which is a good thing. We’ll have the crowd on our side,” Stevens said.

“We’ll approach it like all games, try and reduce our errors and win the possession. If you don’t make any errors and you win the possession, you usually win the game.”

The Women’s preliminary final will be held at Mungalli Creek Dairy Stadium, Atherton this Saturday at 4.30pm.
