Herberton maintains its flower power
HERBERTON Village lends a new meaning to the adage, ‘say it with flowers’, as the 80th annual Flower Show heads up another delightful weekend at the historical town.
The event, which has been running since the first Flower Show of the Herberton Mining, Pastoral and Agricultural Association in 1888, speaks to the community’s love of the town’s history and traditions.
While it has expanded to include photography and crafts over the years, the show format still follows much of that which was developed in 1936 when the Presbyterian Guild took over its running.
This year, as with all years, the event marks the first week of Spring and opens on Saturday from 12pm-5pm, to Sunday from 9am-12 noon.
The official opening is at 1.30pm on Saturday, followed by the popular MAS choir performance at 2pm. Presentations are awarded after 12 noon on Sunday.
Now organised by the Herberton Garden Group, with much assistance and sponsorship from the local community and businesses, the annual Flower and Craft Show and Photography Competition transforms the town and showcases the region’s talents.
The Herberton Community Hall comes alive with a riot of colour as varieties of cut flowers, floral art, pot plants, orchids, garden produce, craft and photography are on display, together with works from local schools and Girl Guides.
Outside, the town also has a bit of a show off, as the Garden Group’s work with TRC raising seedlings, planting, weeding and pruning, pays off with a flourishing spring streetscape.
Back to the business of flowers, the show features 135 exhibit categories ranging from best pansy, rose or gerbera through to best natives and vegetables.
In the needlework section, which includes knitting, crochet, patchwork, hand embroidery and machine sewing, there are 24 exhibit categories.
Over in the craft section, another 24 categories cover painting, millinery, pottery and more, and a junior section rounds off the crafts with its own nine categories.
The Photography competition also provides a dazzling display of amateur-only pictures. Presentation requirements are strict, and entrants should follow instructions when getting their entry forms, available from the Herberton Library and Information centre.

Admission to the show is adults $5, children (up to 14yo) free and the event is cash only.
Make some room for the locally made morning and afternoon teas which are $5, with tickets at the door.
