Insights into breathing

A DEEP dive into the dynamics of breathing will be the focus of a free event at the Mareeba Library next weekend.

Maria Gillies will be delivering an introduction to Buteyko breathing and educating attendees how breathing can directly affect physical health.

Developed in 1952 by the Ukrainian Dr Konstantin Pavlovich Buteyko, the Buteyko method consists of a series of breathing exercises and guidelines specifically designed to reduce over-breathing – clinically known as chronic hyperventilation.

Over time, it is common for people to unconsciously develop non-ideal breathing habits, such as breathing through the mouth during wakefulness and sleep or over-breathing.

This can alter the natural levels of gases in the blood, reduce oxygen delivery to tissue and organs, and cause constriction of the smooth muscles surrounding blood vessels and airways.

The Buteyko method is said to provide relief for those living with asthma, high blood pressure, insomnia, sleep apnoea, anxiety, stress, racing mind, panic attacks, and hyperventilation, among others.

Attendees can expect to learn how the respiratory system works, why common health issues occur, what to do when health challenges arise, and simple exercises to start practicing straight away.

The free event will be held next Saturday 4 July at the Mareeba Library from 9.30am-11am followed by a 30-minute Q&A. Morning tea will be provided. To book a spot, visit www.mariagillies.com/workshop
