Irvinebank to come alive
HISTORICAL displays, guided tours, live music, markets, children’s activities, and community storytelling will all be part of the annual Back to Irvinebank – John Moffat Festival to be staged at the end of the month.
The event celebrates the region’s rich mining history and the legacy of John Moffat, whose vision shaped the township.
From 31 July to 2 August, Irvinebank transforms into festival mode, starting with a guided twilight walk through the historic Irvinebank Cemetery, led by storyteller Shaaron Lindwood, on the Friday night.
Visitors will hear tales of early settlers, mining tragedies, and local legends that shaped the town’s past. This event has become one of the festival’s most popular experiences, blending history with atmosphere and community storytelling.
The School of Arts Hall and Loudoun House Museum will open from Friday afternoon, featuring curated exhibits, photographs, and artefacts from Irvinebank’s mining era.
That night, there will be a Community BBQ Dinner, hosted by the Progress Association, giving locals and visitors a chance to reconnect.
Saturday 1 August is the main festival day, with guest speakers, markets and food vans, and heritage tours of key historical sites including the cemetery, Volcan Mine, school, bank, police station, and Museum.
A full program of children’s activities will be on offer including the money‑loaded sandpit, tug‑of‑war, fishing competition, and a prize draw running from 10am with winners announced at 5pm.
Tin panning and hand steel demonstrations will give visitors a hands‑on look at traditional mining skills, while “Bushie” will share a live demonstration of traditional bush cooking techniques.
Also on the program are poetry presentations by Irvinebank State School students and local poets, a book launch on the region’s history, and an art display of works inspired by the landscape and heritage of Irvinebank by Tony Derksen.
Live entertainment from midday to 5pm featuring the Walkamin Country Music Club will provide a great vibe, followed by a dance night with music from Jeremy Fletcher & Band.
On Sunday, there will be a Recovery Community Breakfast hosted by the Progress Association.
