Jacarandas and a railway birthday
THIS year’s Jacaranda Festival in Herberton brings plenty of purple and blue hues and family fun this Saturday.
Grace Street will be closed for a jacaranda-filled celebration of all things Herberton, from live local music, food vans, face painting, entertainment, clowns, comedy, buggy rides and competitions, to taking a ride on the historic Peckett Steam Train, browsing the Tin Town Markets, and exploring the Herberton Mining Centre.
The festival runs from 10am–3pm and if the plan is to stay the weekend, the Historic Railway Station celebrates its 116th birthday on Sunday with a special cake, and a steampunk-themed day of dress-up, and live steampunk band Littmus.
Topping a list of family fun is an unusual treasure hunt, which has gone “high-tech”. Participants can use complete the hunt with their smartphones; and discover a real treasure at the end.
Herberton Mining Museum will hold a rolling tin panning competition, provide free guided tours of the Great Northern Mine, and showcase interactive displays and glow in the dark minerals.
There is also a decorated bike competition – where contestants are urged to dress themselves and their bikes up to take part.
Visitors can also get up close and personal with some cute friends from Roaming Wild who will be wandering the town for Family Fun Day.
Live entertainment will feature the wonderful Herberton Chamber Orchestra.
If it’s a wander through the community markets, taking in the Railway Museum, or just enjoying the historic town, many local businesses will open their doors including the Historic Village Herberton, Bakerville Tea House, Herberton Jacaranda Cafe, High Grounds Coffee and Royal Hotel Herberton.
