Kangaroos leap over Gladiators to win

THE Kangaroos have hopped away with a 28 point win over the Mareeba Gladiators during their FNQ Rugby League A-grade match-up at Davies Park on Saturday night.

The Gladiators started the game strong with an early try to Ricky Shave after some enterprising play on the right-hand edge.

There was an arm wrestle for the next 15 minutes before Kangaroos hooker Robert Clarke was awarded a try.

The game went back and forward with Mareeba creating a few chances but they were unable to score and Kangaroos continued to pile on the points late in the first half with two tried in the last five minutes before halftime to take a 16-3 halftime lead.

The second half started poorly for the Gladiators with Kangaroos scoring in the first set before the game settled down.

Mareeba went close a couple of times but couldn’t get a try to get back into the contest, all the scoring was finished with 20 minutes to go, and Kangaroos took home the win 32-4.

Gladiators A-grade coach said the score did not accurately reflect the flow of the game.

“The scoreline was not a true reflection of the game and I am really happy with the effort from our young team,” he said.

“The first half we were right in the game and probably dominated for the first 35 minutes but the game goes for 80 and we have got to learn this and get more consistent with our efforts – but we are heading in the right direction.

“We’ve just got to focus on improving and there will be a number of wins around the corner for us.”

This week the Gladiators will play host to the Atherton Roosters for the first round of the Tableland Cup in all three grades.
