Kids learn joys of cycling

THE AusBike Roadshow program made its way to Tablelands schools recently, where kids aged 5-12 were taught the essential skills to experience the “freedom, fun, and adventure of life” on a bike.

The national program, developed by AusCycling – Australia’s national sporting organisation for all things cycling, was delivered in partnership with Atherton-based club Tableland Cycle Sports.

Local primary schools in Mt Molloy, Herberton, and Atherton all took advantage of the program, as well as several schools in and around Cairns over the course of two weeks.

AusBike coaches Jack Lewis and Hayden Fletcher visited the region and delivered a series of one-hour lessons to students.

Each session is designed to teach kids how to ride safely in a fun, inclusive environment and caters for kids with all levels of bike riding experience – whether they’re just off training wheels, or further down the track with their cycling journey.

“The program is a great way of getting kids on bikes and a perfect opportunity to build the club’s resources,” Tableland Cycle Sports vice president Lisa Wilkinson said.

“By supporting the delivery of the AusBike Roadshows, Tableland Cycle Sports now has access to a brand new fleet of bikes and helmets to support future programs and further support grassroots programs in the region, encouraging more kids to take up cycling.”
