Mareeba Shire Council has awarded a tender to Bluewater Marine Qld Pty Ltd to replace the existing intake pipeline and river anchorage works, which deliver raw water to the treatment plant.

Funded by the State Government’s Resilience and Risk Reduction Program, the Kuranda Water Treatment Plant Intake project will improve reliability and resilience of the village water supply.

“Water security is one of council’s highest priorities and this project will strengthen a key component of Kuranda’s water treatment infrastructure,” Mayor Angela Toppin said.

“Projects like this are not always highly visible, but they are essential in ensuring our communities have access to a safe and reliable water supply.”

The $767,690 project will upgrade the “significant damage” to the riverbank facility after the Barron River swelled to a record height of 14 metres in December 2023.

Since then, council had relied on a temporary pump station which had needed constant monitoring and operational adjustments during the wet season.

Mayor Toppin said investing in this essential infrastructure would support future growth across the shire.
