Arts showcase sure success
YOUNG and upcoming artists were in the spotlight last Monday at Mareeba State School with the opening of their arts showcase.
YOUNG and upcoming artists were in the spotlight last Monday at Mareeba State School with the opening of their arts showcase.
The showcase featured art pieces from all grades and classes, with 37 classes in total contributing to the library’s weeklong makeover.
Head of Curriculum Valerie Dayes and Library Manager Leevi Elmes were pleased with the opening and were proud of the student’s art works.
“The students have done a great job with their artworks,” Mrs Dayes said.
“The showcase has been on and off over the years, but we’re starting to make it more regular.
“We do one every year now.”
Each year level in the school was given a medium for their art work, from colouring, to paper mache, clay making, painting and more.
The students each created their artwork based off the theme= ‘material madness’, with some classes taking it literally by making an art piece entirely comprised of natural materials such as sticks, leaves, rocks or by making practical flower pots and wearable skirts from newspaper.
Mrs Elmes was happy to see the library not only packed full of artwork, but also packed full of people.
“It was good to see people coming out and enjoying the artwork the students made,” she said.
“It was really good and we had lots of great feedback.
“We even had people ringing up and leaving messages at the office.”
Mrs Elmes believes that the art showcase not only allows parents and community members to experience the art but also allows students to express their creative desires.
“It’s a great way for kids to express and enjoy themselves,” she said.
“The kids love to do artwork and this way other people can enjoy it too.
“All the classes were very excited – it was one of the best art shows we’ve had”.
